which HDD brand is better?

OK i know that HDD manufacturers have good and bad products, you and your luck might help.

I've got 2x 10 TB ironwolf pro since 2018 in my synology DS216se in a synology hybrid setup (raid 1-ish). But now i need to replace the drives and i would your opinion on which brand to choose.
the capacity doesn't really matter but must be considered due to DR in case things do go south.

I'll keeping my synology DS216se NAS as is with raid 1 setup.

So which brand, only NAS or Server models, Toshiba vs HGST vs SEAGATE vs WD? please be specific on the model that you would recommand in your post.

Keep the name of the model complete such as WD Red plus WD101EFBX written in red, as show here (color code FF0040).

Thank you.

Choose more redundancy. Just more. You can't predict the future (like SMART  ), just minimize the risk. Do backups, do it! Store them far away against fire, water, theft...
I also mix different brands in raids/vdevs to rule out unforeseen quirks with firmware. Oh and avoid buying from the same batch to rule out manufacturing errors etc...

Also avoid disks with SMR or where it isn't clear, check the specsheets, you want CMR.

THE best HDD does simply not exist, but there are less good models:

Anything can and does fail. Your 2 bay DS216se is the problem, get a larger enclosure and look at greater redundancy in raid-6 or shr-2 and lower capacity drives and added bonus will be higher read speeds.

I've said before that recycled enterprise kit provides excellent storage options all be it with a considerable power overhead and allows you to move out of retail SATA drives for storage.

true, but that's what i got at the moment and can't afford something else, unfortunately.

what do you mean by retail SATA? non NAS and non entreprise drives?

I have no idea how you're managing to do anything with just 10TB of space in the modern environment - 1 image and a recovery and you're done. Let alone the clients that mess you about waiting to pay their invoice for a few weeks.

Your synology nas and 2x10TB drives probably cost you as much as a recycled server full of 8TB SAS drives would have.

I do like the synology units, I use one personally as a media server but anything less than 4 drives isn't much use commercially.

the 10 TB space is for my personal use. For work i use 2 WD red drive of 14 TB one that is use as target drive for my Rapidspar device. And the second is used for the 1st drive backup. Most of my cases are drives of less than 2 TB size, also most have a couple of hundreds of GB worth of data.

Unfortunately I don't get enough income for data recovery (despise low prices compared to average cost from EU and North America). And also I don't really check Ebay and etc for such recycled servers. (i also don't take whatever someone wrote about their server as granted). Better safe than sorry.

Toshiba or HGST CMR would likely be the best choices.

I have more than 100+ hard disk drives, mostly (a couple of years) old but the biggest is 1TB and mostly 3.5". I think WD and Toshiba (Toshiba are mfd by WD as far as I know!!???) are the best drives.
